Kindergarten is where it all begins!
At Romulus' Metro Charter Academy elementary school, we offer a full-day kindergarten program. Each day, students are greeted by the principal and assistant principal as they enter the building. They are then greeted by their classroom teacher as they enter the room.
In most rooms, the students begin by journal writing. At first, this may only be a drawing in their notebooks. However, by the end of the year, our students are writing simple sentences and using capital letters and punctuation.
During the day, we put much emphasis on reading. We believe strongly in a “Back-to-Basics” curriculum rich in phonics. Many story booklets are sent home during the year for the children to read to their parents. Our reading program, Open Court, also includes handwriting, creative writing, and exposure to excellent literature. By the end of the year, our kindergarten students are early readers.
We use Saxon Math at Metro Charter elementary school. This is a hands-on math program. The students work on shapes, sorting, patterns and putting numbers in sequence. They work on the calendar; learn the days of the week and the months of the year. Our goal is for each student to be able to count to 100 or higher and have a basic understanding of addition and subtraction.
The rest of the students’ day is spent on science, social studies, music and story time.
At Metro, we have high expectations for ALL of our elementary and middle school students…including kindergartners! We want to give them the best educational start possible!
