Romulus' Metro Charter Academy focus on academics is evident throughout our middle school curriculum. We expect a lot from our middle school students. They will be doing algebra by the time they leave Metro. In addition, they will be exposed to classic literature; reading such novels as Animal Farm and The Good Earth. They will also take social studies and science. Our science department puts on a wonderful science night each year and the middle school students are expected to display a project for judging that night.
All middle school students take part in a program called 7 Habits of a Highly Effective Teen. Taken in seventh grade, this program teaches the student about goal-setting, personal responsibility, self-improvement, and more.
Middle school students are also allowed to choose from numerous electives during the year. We offer band, choir, Orff instruments (a type of percussive instruments), Spanish, art, and physical education.
Realizing every child is working at a different level, Metro strives to reach EACH child’s individual needs. Middle school students who are struggling are given extra help with reading and math. We have several programs available designed to help these students.
Middle school students who are willing and able to excel are often given more challenging assignments or activities in the classroom so that their capabilities can be reflected in academic growth. In addition, our Accelerated Learners Program (ALPs) is for those students who consistently excel above grade level and are motivated to move beyond. It is a smaller, self-contained, multi-level classroom where everyone moves at a higher level and faster pace than a typical regular education classroom.
To give our students a strong middle school feeling, we offer athletics, National Junior Honor Society and Student Council. Many of our after-school activities are aimed at the older students. Four middle school dances are planned each year. The students enjoy a DJ, pizza and prizes.
Metro’s Middle School is a well-rounded experience!
